Liverpool Transfer News: Brendan Rodgers Says Reds Are Still Chasing New Signing

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers will continue to look for new signings until the end of the January transfer window.

The Reds have failed in their attempts to bring in a winger so far this month, with top target Mohamed Salah joining Chelsea.

A Daily Mail report by Dominic King claims Rodgers would even consider making a loan signing in order to bolster his squad.

And Rodgers has admitted he would be disappointed if he didn't bring in new players:

Of course I wanted to strengthen the team that was already here.

If we are unable to that it would be disappointing, but there’s nothing you can do about it. If we don’t get them in then, as a coach, I’ll work with what I’ve got. There’s no point in looking back on it. We’ll reflect on it and as I said my sole intention then will be to maximise and get everything out of the players I have left. We can identify the players that we want to bring in and we hope we can get them in.

Liverpool stand a very real chance of Champions League qualification this season, but, although they are currently fourth, their situation is by no means secure.

Although rivals Tottenham and Evertonhaven't strengthened significantly in January, Manchester United's signing ofJuan Mata could see them fight back into the reckoning.

Adding new faces to an already strong squad is what could have set Liverpool apart from the other contenders and given them an added chance of maintaining their current advantage.

Ed Malyon of the Mirror believes Rodgers has been left frustrated by the club's failure to progress on his transfer budgets:

Rodgers' previous record of signing Daniel Sturridge and PhilippeCoutinho shows that he is able to identify premium talent in the mid-season window.

And the identification of players like Salah and Cristian Tello, per LiamPrenderville in the Mirror, shows that Rodgers had very clear ideas about how he wanted to develop his squad.

What may count in Liverpool's favour is their lack of European football, and as such a longer time between matches to recover.

It has allowed them, so far, to be fresh for the Premier League games and put them in this position to challenge.

They may get away with one transfer window of missed opportunity, but they will not be able to do it again in the summer if they want to continue to progress like they have already done under Rodgers' managemen
